The Energy Transition Partnership (ETP) for the EU fisheries and aquaculture sector, under the European Commission (DG MARE), hosted a new series of workshops focusing on the energy transition and decarbonisation of EU fisheries, involving representatives and stakeholders from three key sectors Small-Scale Fisheries (SSCF), Large-Scale Fisheries (LSF), Distant Water Fleet (DWF) on 11-12 December 2024.
The hybrid event brought together over 100 participants from 28 countries, representing diverse stakeholders such as public authorities, industry representatives, academic institutions, fisheries companies, NGOs, and key EU bodies.
Key takeaways from the workshops:
- Focus on energy efficiency – e.g., energy audits, retrofitting vessels, implementing hybrid or multi-fuel engines, and optimising onboard processes.
- Adoption of alternative fuels and technologies – transitioning to sustainable fuels, including infrastructure development.
- Training and upskilling – equipping fishers with the necessary knowledge and skills.
- Collaboration and funding – building partnerships and securing financial support.
- Creating a long-term vision for the energy transition – establishing clear, strategic goals.
